Nelson Region Information

On the northern most tip of New Zealand’s South Island lies Nelson, New Zealand’s oldest city, offering a variety of entertainment, dining and cultural experiences amidst some of the most spectacular natural landscapes and opportunities for adventure that New Zealand has on offer.

Regular ferry services from Wellington will get you across the Cook Strait to Nelson in roughly three hours. Alternatively, a flight from Auckland takes approximately 80 minutes.  A road trip is a very popular option from Christchurch up to Nelson, a drive that takes six hours in total can be spread out over a day or two and is a perfect opportunity to gain a true appreciation for the natural beauty of the South Island. Wind your way through beech forests, towering limestone cliffs and beautiful valleys as you make your way up the Kaikoura coastline.

To get a good taste of Nelson, make sure you set aside a day to walk around the city centre. Be sure to stop in at the World of Wearable Art Museum, open every day, with an impressive collection of art that is, indeed, all wearable! Founders Park is also worth a visit for those wishing to explore Nelson’s history through its historical buildings, museums and displays. If you happen to be there on Saturday morning, the Nelson Markets attract a good local crowd.

If you’re in search of outdoor adventure to please the whole family, Nelson is a good base.  There is plenty on offer from skydiving over snow-capped mountains, to rafting in some of the best white water rapids in the world. Map out a section of the Heaphy Track through the Kahurangi National Park and hire some mountain bikes for a first hand experience of the absolute diversity of environments. For those after a more laid back experience, jump on a bus and head out to Tahunanui Beach with the little ones, or wade through one of the many crystal clear rivers and try your hand (and your patience) at fly-fishing.
