Accessible by road or a short ferry ride west from Paihia, the tranquil coastal town of Russell, or Kororareka as it was formerly known, was the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand and the nation's original capital. The site of a fierce battle during the Flagstaff War in 1845, the township retains much of it's colonial flavour through it's heritage and architecture, with craft shops and cafes occupying many of the historic buildings.
Visitors can take in the area's history at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (Need footage) as well as Christ Church. This is New Zealand's oldest surviving church and it still bears the scars of past conflict.
