Located in the extreme south of the North Island, Wellington is the capital and third largest city in New Zealand and is home to a population of around 400,000 people. The city is situated on beautiful Wellington Harbour and has an abundance of natural scenery all around. The city seems to have grown out of the harbour and spread up the surrounding hills giving it a feel reminiscent of San Francisco in a way.

This city is huge on culture and all through the city you'll find museums, art galleries, theatres and performance spaces making Wellington the country's unofficial cultural capital. There is also a plethora of wining and dining options in Welly with great restaurants and more than 400 cafes spread throughout the city.
Because the city is quite compact everything is within easy reach meaning visitors are spoiled for choice. Take a walk around the town or grab a bike and head up into the surrounding hinterland, take a trip to one of the many fabulous wineries nearby, or explore the spectacular countryside that was made famous by the Lord of the Rings movie. There are also many historical attractions such as the heritage Parliament Buildings, the National Archive and the Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa Tongarewa).
Wellington's beautiful Botanic Gardens are a short drive up the hill from the city centre, but why not catch the Wellington Cable Car which is a great way to take in the sights while getting to the gardens. The Wellington Zoo is compact in area but packs a lot in with many unusual animals that are unique to Australia and New Zealand, while Staglands Wildlife Reserve give kids and adults the chance to get up close to some of New Zealand's native animals and even feed them.
Wellington is a holiday destination for the whole family where you can choose an action packed adventure, a cultural experience or a trip to get close to nature, or all three. One thing is for certain - once you've visited Wellington you'll just want to keep coming back.
