Wellington Information

Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and a cultural, political, and artistic hub in the country. With a population of about 400,000, the city offers some of the best dining, music, and shopping around, while still providing access to some of New Zealand's stunning natural beauty.

Set against a small harbour and fringed by large hills, much of the city is fairly dense with the inner-city area a vibrant centre for the city's coffee culture, music, and arts scene. Numerous bars and world-class restaurants, as well as art galleries, museums, and nightclubs can be found all around the easily-navigable central districts.

Visitors can soak up some of New Zealand's history and explore the culture of the indigenous Maori people at Te Papa (the country's national museum), get a good view of the city from the lookouts on Mount Victoria and Mount Kaukau, and venture out to some of the nearby scenic locations.

Not too far from the city centre is the renowned Seal Colony along the distinctive Red Rocks, and the beginning of New Zealand's rugged South Coast, not to mention a range of wineries and bushland hiking tracks.

Temperatures in Wellington generally don't exceed 25C in the summer, and day-time temperatures in winter are usually in the double digits. However, Wellington is known across New Zealand as the 'Windy City', and visitors should dress accordingly -particularly in winter.

If you plan to stick to the inner-city areas getting around Wellington is easiest by foot, though the city's bus network is excellent and there are a range of taxi services to choose from. Wellington Airport has fiights to most major cities in New Zealand and Australia.
