Popular as a base from which to enjoy island-hopping in the Thailand province of Krabi, Ao Nang has a fair share of international tourists attracted by the upmarket resorts with their landscaped garden pools and good quality restaurants. Centrally located on the coastline of Krabi province in southern Thailand, Ao Nang is one of the region's busiest beaches and is considered to be the most 'westernised.'
With almost everything situated on the beach or the highway which runs parallel to the beach, navigation of the area is very easy. The population of the entire province is well under half a million people, and part of Ao Nang's appeal lies in the fact that it has been largely unspoiled by over-population and development. Instead it offers a range of excellent world-class tourist facilities while retaining its natural beauty and charm.

The strip opposite the main beach has recently been revamped and has a pleasant line-up of shops, restaurants and up-market hotels. It is picturesque at night with light from the many shopfronts spilling onto the footpath and outdoor cafes and restaurants making it possible to relax with a drink and take in the holiday atmosphere. For lovers of Thai cuisine, there are ample opportunities to taste the local fare. With street vendors on every corner and a number of traditional restaurants and markets, visitors to Ao Nang can sample the broad range of fresh, local ingredients. In addition to this there are many other Western options available, serving steaks, pizza, pasta and traditional English food.
Most tourists head to Ao Nang in order to take advantage of the 'longtail boats' that line the shore of the beach, offering access to the many stunning beach locations on nearby islands. The most sought after location is Railay beach (also known as Rai Leh) and is a short 15 minute ride away. A stunning blend of white sand, turquoise water and towering cliffs in the background it is a great spot for sunbathing, swimming or participating in the many activities on offer including beach volleyball, games of football or for the adventurous folk, rock climbing.
Sea Kayaking is another popular reason for staying in Ao Nang as there are a large number of tour operators offering exciting tours of the mangroves and islands close to Ao Nang. Most tours are all-inclusive, providing food, drinks, equipment and experienced guides. A popular destination is the sea caves with their ancient paintings (Ban Bho Tho) and archaeological shell formations. There are also a number of operators that offer elephant treks into the jungles in the surrounding area, providing visitors the chance to spot exotic birds, see monkeys and marvel at the region's lush and natural beauty.
