Bangkok Information

Bangkok is a city that doesn’t aspire to be anything in particular, rather, it is everything! With its beginnings as a small trading post near the mouth of the Choa Phraya River, in just two hundred years Bangkok has grown outwards and skywards into a striking Asian metropolis which attracts 11 million visitors per year – almost as many as Paris and London! And why do they come? Because, if there is one city on Earth that best represents the human situation in all its rich, dynamic glory, it is surely Bangkok, the City Of Angels.

Thailand is a land of contrasts, and in Bangkok these contrasts sit cheek to cheek. Many of South East Asia’s most serene temples and places of worship share the skyline with some of the world’s most dizzying entertainment venues and stylish clubs. Saffron robed Buddhist monks gently pad the cities sidewalks, while in stadiums across the city, Thai kick-boxers pound each other with lightning fast punches and electrifying roundhouse kicks. On the streets, scooters and tuk tuks zip through the traffic, while on the river and canals, long-tailed boats ferry the populace from one end of town to the other.

Bangkok is a city to experience some of the world’s most incredible cuisines. Work your way through a traditional Thai banquet in an old-style teak house, or a cutting edge fusion menu on a skyscraper rooftop. All the great foods of Thailand come to Bangkok, from much loved country classics and regional specialties, to the freshest harvests from land and sea. But you don’t have step foot inside a restaurant to taste it, the streets and markets are a steamy pageant alive with the culinary noises, aromas and colours unique to Thailand.

The phrase ‘shoppers paradise’ takes on a whole new meaning in Bangkok. The range of goods here, from handicrafts to designer goods, almost defies description. Even the most reluctant shoppers get swept up in the hunt for the ultimate bargain! Bangkok shopping culture is infectious, and from palatial malls to floating markets, you’ll find plenty of places to scratch the shopping itch!

But Bangkok is not just a place to stimulate the senses, it’s also a place to satisfy the soul. This is a city of devout festivals and hundreds of heavenly temples. It’s a city where every home has a spirit-house, and where the populace observe charity and devotion to ritual. Buddha looms very large in the consciousness of this city; there is an Emerald Buddha, a Golden Buddha, and most famous of all, the 46 meter long reclining Buddha at Wat Pho.

So prepare yourself, Bangkok can be a wild ride one minute, a crystal clear moment of tranquillity the next. Few cities can offer so many sensations, so many surprises from one street corner to the next. But what makes this incredible city so truly special, are the Thai people who hold it all together with a smile.
