Kanchanaburi Information

Kanchanaburi lies around 130 kilometres west of Bangkok. It is a mostly mountainous area that covers almost 20,000 square kilometres and borders Myanmar to the west. The province is named after an ancient village that lies just to the north of the city of Kanchanaburi today. It is Thailands third largest province.

Two major rivers traverse the province the Maenam Khwae Noi (River Kwai) and the Maenam Khwae Yai. Several of Thailands largest and most spectacular waterfalls can be found here as well as large wildlife sanctuaries.

The magnificent landscape and charming appeal of Kanchanaburi have resulted in several major tourist attractions in addition to the waterfalls including fascinating caves once inhabited by Neolithic man, beautiful rivers, pristine national parks and forests. Together, they offer visitors a huge range of options for activities throughout the area. Fishing and water sports, mountain biking, bird-watching, star-gazing, golfing, elephant and jungle trekking, or even living in bamboo rafts, Kanchanaburi takes pride in offering them all. Additionally the region has a number of World War II sites that attract a large number of visitors. There are moving memorials to lost prisoners of war that worked on the infamous Death Railway at Hellfire Pass and the famous Bridge over the River Kwai is still in existance today.

The area is growing in popularity with tourists who are discovering that there is much more to Thailand than beaches and big city shopping. The charming and simple rural life of Kanchanaburi is filled with culture and friendly faces. Traditional ways of life are still enjoyed here and offer visitors a glimpse of a lifestyle that recognises the importance of nature and is filled with simple pleasures.
