Koh Chang Information

The relatively undeveloped island of Ko Chang offers travellers an alternative to the other more popular and commercialised Thai beach destinations. As the second largest island in Thailand, it has become increasingly favoured by those wanting a more authentic and slower-paced cultural experience.

Located on the eastern coast and just over 300km away from Bangkok, this idyllic island paradise is approximately 30 km in length with about 24 km of roads connecting the nine villages within. Sparsely populated, the island is home to just fewer than 5000 people. There are an increasing number of up-market resorts situated on the island's west coast, with its long stretches of white, sandy beaches. The island is mountainous with stunning waterfalls, luscious rainforests and coral reefs attracting an abundance of colourful marine life.

As part of Mu Ko Chang Marine National Park, the island's wildlife includes exotic birds, deer, snakes and even a number of elephants—although these are not native to the area. For animal lovers, a visit to the Ban Kwan Elephant Camp is a fantastic experience. Here you can participate in a 90 minute session that includes bathing, feeding and riding elephants that are no longer used for work purposes and have been 'retired' to live in this beautiful nature reserve.

For those wanting to explore the natural beauty of the region there are plenty of jungle walks and hiking trails. A great option is to take an all day hike between Khlong-Plu Waterfall and Than Mayom Waterfall with a local ranger. Jungle treks and other adventure activities are easily organised through one of the many agencies located on the island.

Diving enthusiasts love the pristine waters of Ko Chang and there are a number of Diving Schools with equipment for hire on the island. Because parts of the island are a marine park, there are some fantastic diving locations that are protected from fishing and have great visibility. The best area for experienced divers is in the Ko Rang region. However Hin Luk Bat at the southern end of island offers a coral-covered seamount that is a safe haven for many of the region's exotic fish.

For those who prefer snorkelling, there are companies that operate tours and gourmet cruises, complete with a cocktail bar and luxury amenities. With the snorkelling equipment including in the price, this is all you need for a fabulous day out.

The lovely beaches of Ko Chang have a sprinkling of restaurants offering local seafood and gorgeous views. Check out the Rock Sand Resort located on White Sand Beach. With the tables situated on a terrace that overlooks the water it provides great food and unforgettable views of the sunset. You won't be disappointed!
