Texas Information

Known for its size, colourful history, and friendly, outgoing people, Texas probably has the most distinct reputation of any U.S. state. Once an independent country in its own right, Texas has seen a total of six countries lay claim to it (hence the Texan saying “six flags over Texas”). Locals are mighty proud of their unique heritage, and you’re likely to find the state’s ‘Lone Star’ flag just about everywhere. But don’t let that fool you into thinking all Texans fit neatly under the cowboy moniker the state’s twenty five million strong population is as diverse as any in America, and while a large portion (nearly one third) has Hispanic roots, the state enjoys a truly eclectic mix of immigrants from around the world.

If you are looking for the authentic cowboy experience, you aren’t likely to find it in any of the state’s larger cities. Houston, Dallas, and Austin (to name only a few) are home to millions of people from all walks of life, as well as a truly impressive high-tech industry paralleled only in California. From the live music culture and festivals of Austin to the sprawling metropolis that is Houston, Texas’s cities are buzzing with life. The bars, restaurants, and theatres will leave nothing wanting, and visitors will find a huge range of cultural, educational, and leisure activities with ease.

That aside, if you do venture out into the countryside in search of authentic Texan culture you won’t be disappointed. The state is dotted with cattle ranches that offer a good glimpse of the more traditional Texan way of life. Also worth checking out are some of the state’s national parks, where the multitude of natural phenomena that characterise the Texan landscape are accessible. Be sure to check out a couple if you have the time though the vast size of Texas means the countryside can change quite noticeably from place to place.

Texas is a part of the United States with an alluring mixture of culture and character, and regardless of whether you prefer the more sophisticated attractions of the big cities or the ruggedness and solitude of the wilderness, Texas is sure to please.
