A Weekend on the Coast of Sunshine

23 May 2013

Reluctant to give up on the warmth of summer, Marie Sutton from Flight Centre Auckland grabbed her passport and headed over the Tasman for a long weekend.

One of the best things about Sunshine Coast holidays is just how close the region is to New Zealand. With warmer temperatures than here all year round, it’s the perfect long weekend getaway.

You can fly into Brisbane and drive up the Coast, or over the winter months, Air New Zealand flies directly into the Sunshine Coast. I was just outside the direct flight period, so flew into Brisbane and hired a car from Redback Rentals at the airport and headed up to Noosa for four nights. Here are just a few reasons (or excuses!) to pop over the ditch.

Driving up from Brisbane is very easy, it is well signposted and mostly on the highway so there isn’t much chance of getting lost!

I chose Noosa as we wanted a relaxing long weekend away and it was the perfect choice, although many of the beach towns up the Sunshine Coast all offer something unique. Having the hire car means you can check out different beaches too – a different beach a day, perfect!

I chose to stay at the Outrigger Little Hastings Street. It’s a 5-star village-style resort nestled in the hill of Noosa. While having to trek down the hill to get to the beach can become tiresome, it’s quite nice to be away from the hustle and bustle in the hills. And they provide a courtesy shuttle down the hill and back if you need it after a hard days shopping or a big meal out!

Among the many things to do in Sunshine Coast, make sure you plan your trip over a weekend as the Eumundi Markets are a must! Actually, the markets also run on a Wednesday so that makes it easier to visit these famous markets. They are the biggest markets I have ever visited had has a range of arts, crafts and of course delicious food. Definitely go hungry, you won’t be disappointed.

I love markets, so I backed our visit up to the Eumundi Markets on Saturday to a visit to the Noosa Markets on Sunday (I did say I loved markets!) These are held every Sunday at the Noosa Marina. Browse the markets then have brunch or lunch at one of the restaurants on the Marina – a perfect Sunday morning.

Hastings St is the main street of Noosa and is full of boutique shops and cafes. I happily strolled along there for an afternoon looking in all the shops. Going to the Surf Club for a meal is also very worthwhile. The meals are reasonably priced but also it has the best view – the large deck opens up to complete uninterrupted views of the beach, beautiful.

While you’re there I really recommend going for a walk through the national park. It’s just up the hill from Hastings Street and there are a range of walks you can do. We chose the 2 – 3 hour walk which takes you through the national park under the tree canopies then you hit the top at Hell’s Gate and walk back along the coastal walk. Even saw a few dolphins playing in the distance, magical.

With Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and the Hinterland all within easy reach, heading to Noosa is the perfect getaway, no matter how long you’re there!
