There is so much more to Hawaii than it's beaches, culture and honeymoon spots. Tina Arthur, Flight Centre Travel Broker from Wellington, reveals the true beauty of Hawaii and the landscape it has to offer. From the picturesque mountains to the breathtaking volcanic landscape... Aloha from The Big Island in Hawaii!!
While the majority of tourists to Hawaii hit the main island Oahu and the world famous Waikiki beach, I headed straight for “the big island”of Hawai’i where the sunsets are AH-MAZING and the views on offer are picture perfect every evening.
What better way to enjoy the scenery than watching the last of the surfers ride out their best tube of the day, with the temperature still sitting around 26 degrees and a Mai Tai in hand!
If you want to see the best of the big island of Hawaii, don't miss the 45 minute thrill seeking Volcano & Rainforest adventure with Tropical Helicopter Tours. Our guide talked us into opting for the ‘doors off option’ in the smallest Helicopter in their fleet, which ended up being well worth it. The weather was stunning, clear blue skies and as the Lava had been flowing for the first time in months, there were perfect opportunities for great pictures, hanging out the sides!!
The lava flows span areas so large in places, it’s like looking out across the ocean as far as the eye can see...You have to see it to believe it! And from the air is by far the best way to view the amazing landscape. We also flew over the National Park and Chain of Craters to the Rainbow Falls - this is Jurassic Park territory...
This side of the island is very lush and green, it rains often and is surrounded by several rainforests and waterfalls. Like the craters and lava fields, you just can’t get this close or see it’s beauty from this angle by road or by foot.
If heights is a no go zone for you, another great way to experience the Island is to rent a car. We had a RED Mustang Convertible and travelled north from Kona township up and around to Hilo on the East side of The Big Island. The drive takes around 3 hours and the complete round Island trip was close to 5.5 hours. A great day trip, especially in the Mustang!!
The Big Island of Hawai'i offers so many activities for visitors including snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, surfing, night swimming with Manta Rays, air tours, cultural shows, golf, rainforest walks, horseback riding, cycling excursions.... oh, and did I mention shopping?! The locals are super friendly and extremely laid back and the coffee is great too!! Don’t miss the Lava Java Cafe along the ocean front - it’s the place to be seen.
This place is pure bliss and my kind of holiday!
