Falling in love with Hawaii, Megan Heslop from Flight Centre Timaru shares her experiences and top accommodation tips for Hawaii holidays.

Hawaii is such a great destination for anyone whether young, old, families, honeymooners, stag parties, hen parties, weddings, anniversary, birthdays, shopping, adventurous, relaxed... Whatever holiday you are after you can find it in O'ahu! It has everything you need right at your doorstep.

Hawaii’s Waikiki Beach is one of the best known beaches in the world, with wide, white sands framed by the volcanic cone of Diamond Head in the background. Combine this with a holiday on Maui, the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands which boasts more miles of swimmable beach than any other.

Where to stay while you're hitting the beaches or shops in Hawaii? I'm glad you asked - here are my top picks.

Aston Waikiki Banyan: Spacious 1 and 2 bedroom suites with full kitchen and dining/lounge area. Recreation area for the kids, tennis courts, pool and BBQ area.

Ilikai Hotel and Suites: Situated oceanfront on the Ala Wai Marina, next to a lagoon safe for kids' swimming and water sports. Also boasts the best Italian restaurant in the state.

Aulani Disney Resort and Spa: This is Disney with a Hawaiian theme - a kids paradise and great for the big kids at heart. Located 45 minutes from Waikiki, this is over 21 acres of fun, with pools, whirlpool spas, golf nearby, private snorkelling lagoon great for first timers, and nightly entertainment.

Waikiki Beach Marriott: Over 1300 guest rooms and suites all with private balconies, just steps from the beach. Lovely bar area and restaurant.

Kanaka Hotel & Resort: A great resort located away from the crowds but still close enough for all the excitement in Waikiki. Beautiful white sandy beaches and tropical gardens, plus you can cosy up to dolphins in the dolphin lagoon.

Hilton Waikiki: This beautiful hotel, located a 3 minute walk from the beach, recently had a $65 million makeover. All rooms have balconies and feature Hilton Serenity Beds - the most comfortable beds ever!

The Modern: The name says it all! This is a beautiful luxury hotel, opened only 2 years ago. Everything you need is at this property, including the Morimoto Japanese restaurant. The Ala Moana shopping mall is within walking distance and Addiction night club next door is the place for some celeb-spotting.
