Tropical North Queensland is just a hop skip and a jump across the ditch for most Kiwi's and offers a tropical climate, picturesque landscape and amazing wildlife. It's the perfect destination for families, couple or friends travelling together. Flight Centre’s Selena Black from our Devonport store shares how to get the best out of your trip when visiting Tropical North Queensland.
Just a 4.5 hour flight from Auckland to Tropical North Queensland, you can find yourself experiencing the warm air and towering palm trees of the Pacific, and the turquoise blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
Best time to go
Great weather all year round, but during the southern hemisphere winter months is the best time to visit.
Cairns is your entry point into the region where you should stay few days as it has a laid back vibe and is a perfect place to relax after a day of exploring Great Barrier Reef’s hidden treasures. Wander along the stunning esplanade, join in with the hugely popular public exercise session in the park before tucking into a plate of succulent Moreton Bay Bugs (tasty Australian seafood delicacy). The day wouldn't be complete without enjoying the waterfront views at one of the local bars.
Contrary to some rumours, the water is not writhing with crocs (however I would definitely be wary about swimming in murky rivers).
The hour drive up to Port Douglas is amazing. A lush mountain range sits to the west of the road; for a unique touristy experience catch the Kuranda Railway up into the rainforest, and gondola down for epic views.
Port Douglas is a holidaymakers dream. Used for the filming of Caribbean set movie ‘Fool’s Gold’, the sand is so white it almost glows. Standard building consent only allows for building heights below the level of the tree tops, so when you are on the beach, the feeling of being on a desert island is absolute.
For swimming, the northern beaches of Kewara and Palm Cove are the places to go. Hire a car and let the palm trees lead the way.
