When you think of the Gold Coast, Australia what comes to mind? Dreamworld, Movieworld, beaches, shopping? Amy Platt from our Flight Centre Manurewa store found heights at Mt Tamborine, thrills at the themeparks, and relaxation in the Hinterlands.
Looking for High Thrills, we headed to the Gold Coast theme parks. Dreamworld, Movieworld, Whitewater World.
Dreamworld now offers seven 'Thrill Rides' – the Buzzsaw is the latest addition, offering the highest inversion ride in the southern hemisphere.
SeaWorld is really popular with families and the dolphin show is a must. They have polar bears, penguins, a touch pool with rays. There is a huge glass viewing area in the shark pool so you have the most amazing view of the fish.
If the heat is too much for you, head on over to Whitewater World to try a couple of the waterslides and the wave pool. You could easily spend a full day at each of these parks, and they cater for all ages.
For Aussie animals and high ropes, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a fantastic place for the whole family where you have the chance to have your photo taken holding a snake or a koala. Their high ropes course has three different levels of difficulty. Green, red and black. It's great for families as the whole family can be up on the course together.
On the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary night tour you will see the animals that are active at night and you get to enjoy an Aussie BBQ.
For a quieter pace, head inland to the hinterlands and Mt Tamborine. The national park is beautiful, and definitely something different from the beach and theme parks. It's relaxed and a little bit cooler up in the mountains. It has kind of a hippy feel with quirky shops etc.
The Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a 300m long metal bridge high above the rainforest canopy. It's an eco-adventure like no other. The walk takes about one hour to complete and is okay for all levels of fitness. There's even a lookout over some waterfalls.
Tamborine Mountain Distillery is nearby and is Australia's smallest operating port distillery. The distillery receives a considerable diversity of fruit from other growers which they turn into beautiful, smooth, Schnapps, Liqueurs, Fruit Brandy, Gins and Vodkas – all available from cellar door, and most are in beautiful, hand-painted bottles.
Finally, don’t miss heading up the Q1 Resort to the skypoint viewing deck which overlooks the Gold Coast. It's amazing to see the ocean on one side and the river and the hinterlands on the other.
I've now had a small taste of the Gold Coast and I now know why kiwis keep going back. There is so much to see and do, you can't possibly do it all in one trip!
