To try something different on Malaysia holidays take a visit to a Mamak restaurant.

‘Mamaks’ were originally open-air food stalls often located on sidewalks, road-sides and in parking lots and was actually a term for Indian Muslims.

However, now it has become so commonplace that it simply refers to any roadside stall or restaurant that sells traditional Indian food and drinks.

Extremely popular in Kuala Lumpur, Mamak restaurants have become a place to catch up with friends while tucking into spicy curries, traditional tandoori and a world of other culinary delights with cheap food and beverages being served 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

To experience other sides of Malaysia culture and life there are also some excellent day trips from Kuala Lumpur.

Malacca is an old historic city with canals and cobblestone streets, while Taiping is a small town with beautiful lake gardens. Or take a ferry to Penang Island to enjoy the sights along the way.

Of course, Kuala Lumpur is a destination worthy of exploration in itself, with its 88 storey high Petronas Towers, huge aquarium and craft market Little India.
