There's no better place to get back to nature than North Queensland, as Jennifer Hughes from Flight Centre Eastridge discovered.
Tropical North Queensland is a top holiday destination for everyone. The region feels very much like a tropical island with a lot to see in a very laid-back atmosphere.
It's great for families with older children as there are lots to see and do, including reef experiences, beaches and Cairns Zoom Dome. And it's great for couples as well, with lots of romantic spots, secluded beaches and resorts, plus private tours out to the reef.
One of the most amazing parts of any Australia holidays is the Great Barrier Reef. We went out on Quicksilver and they were fantastic. It's such a great day out and well suited to all kinds of people. Trinity Beach is great for young families as there is a nice swimming beach and friendly community.
We had an awesome time at the Cairns Zoo, where we had a zoo keeper showing us around and helping arrange the classic koala photos and even holding snakes!
Kuranda Railway is possibly more suited to an older crowd, but the gondolas on the way back over the rainforest were truly amazing. I also really enjoyed the hot air ballooning out of Cairns; we saw the most amazing sunset from up there.
Travellers looking for some 'retail therapy' would definitely be best doing their shopping in Cairns over Port Douglas or Palm Cove. Cairns has some larger malls with high street-style shops, while the other spots are more boutique surf shops and souvenir shopping.
Visitors will need somewhere good to rest up after all this sightseeing, so my top Queensland hotel picks would be:
Shangri-La Hotel Cairns - A beautiful modern 5 star property with large rooms featuring views of the harbour available. Enjoy your buffet breakfast harbour side with great views while the chefs make pancakes etc. to order.
Pullman Hotel and Resort Cairns - This is right in central Cairns with suites offering full kitchens and private balconies, many with good views of the harbour. There's a great restaurant on-site and a casino downstairs.
Rendezvous Port Douglas - This makes a good base to explore the area as there is room for car parking etc. It's a great option for families particularly, as the hotel has large full size villas with kitchen facilities. There are also all the usual resort facilities such as pools, restaurants and BBQ facilities.
Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas – An amazing pool wraps around the whole of this resort. The breakfast is the best in the area, offering anything you could want at the buffet. best of all, the beach is just steps away.
