Top Tips for a Gold Coast Family Holiday

26 August 2014

The Gold Coast is a popular holiday destination for kiwi travellers looking to enjoy a quick overseas getaway or a fun filled family vacation! If you're planning a Gold Coast Holiday, read our tips below before you pack.

Theme parks, beautiful beaches, nature walks and some of the latest fashion is just some of the things you can expect to find in the Gold Coast. Whether you're after a relaxing holiday or an action packed getaway, you will be able to find something to suit you and the family!

Booking your holiday

With so many things to see and do in the Gold Coast we recommend planning your holiday before you go. Choosing the right holiday package is essential and there are often some great deals available. Are you planning a family holiday? See what's on offer and pick a package that suits you. Some packages include bonus extras like theme park tickets which can often save you money and time.

There are some great choices in family share holiday packages from modest hotels right up to a 5-star resort if you really want to treat the family. Family holidays can be tiring after a long day out with the kids so spacious accommodation is also essential. It's great to spend quality time as a family, but some 'me' time for all members is always a good idea to keep everyone sane!

Visiting the theme parks

Eating at theme parks can be quite expensive when visiting with a family and the queues can get long. Taking a packed lunch will save you money and time waiting in queues. Don't forget to bring plenty of water!

If you're travelling with younger children, we recommend going to Sea World. This is the best theme park for kids under six years because it has rides available for the youngsters and also has a variety of shows that will entertain all ages.

When you're planning your holiday, try to allow one day for each theme park. There are a lot of rides and the kids are sure to be tempted to go back more than once. If you're short on time (or despise queuing), you can also purchase a queue skip pass. It doesn't cost much and it means you can avoid spending hours in line.

Movie World and Dream World are just two of the main theme parks in the Gold Coast which will blow your socks off - perfect for the thrill seekers! If you can, try and visit the water parks on the warmer days. When you're waiting in line for the rides you will appreciate the refreshing splash at the end.

For the ultimate in convenience, you can also purchase a '3 Park Super Pass' if you purchase a holiday package which doesn't include tickets. These combo passes include Movie World, Sea World and Wet n Wild.

Things to do with kids

As well as the beaches and theme parks, check out the Gold Coast hinterland. This is an easily accessible area on Tambourine Mountain and a great way to have a break from the glitz and glamour of the Gold Coast, there are also plenty of sightseeing opportunities and picnic areas on the way. Walk one of the pristine rain forest tracks or if you're visiting on a weekend, check out the Tamborine Country Markets. These are held on the second Sunday of every month.

A Gold Coast holiday isn't complete without seeing Koalas and Kangaroos! A day trip to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS) is a great way to have an educational family outing. From Koalas and Kangaroos to Dingos and Crocodiles, CWS has a wide range of wildlife and entertainment for everyone including sheep shearing and Aboriginal dance shows.

Shopping outlets

If you're looking for a bargain head to Harbour Town for a day out shopping! Harbour Town is full of outlet shops which have all of the great brands with a cheaper price tag. They also have smaller speciality shops if you're looking for something different. If you prefer shopping centres (or maybe just air conditioning), head to Pacific Fair which is conveniently located in Broadbeach.
