Western Australia Calling All Kiwi Foodies

27 March 2013

Wineries, festivals and one of the best jobs in the world are reasons Western Australia are hoping to lure Kiwis to holiday there.

Last year 80,000 New Zealand holidaymakers visited the state, and Tourism Western Australia is encouraging even more Kiwis to do so in 2013. But why should we consider a Perth holiday or wine trail around the regional centres?

Food and wine events are becoming very popular, and increasingly a highlight for visiting tourists. The Margaret River area is already established as a destination for its beaches, but is now moving more towards food and wine with events like the Margaret River Gourmet Escape.

In East Kimberley there is also the renowned cultural celebration the Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster. Taking place in May this year, the festival features a cooking show with a celebrity chef, a street party, a comedy night and a concert. More than 3000 people went along last year, a record for the growing event.

The city of Perth continues to evolve as well, with burgeoning development on the back of the mining boom. Construction is underway on a new waterfront hotel, restaurant and entertainment complex, scheduled to be fully open in 3 years and offering tourists an exciting venue in the heart of the city.

Heading south towards the coast there are other areas seeking to attract the foodies amongst us, such as the town of Denmark which is gaining a reputation as a wine producer.

Western Australia

Western Australia has gone social as well with their 1001 Extraordinary Experiences online campaign hosted by former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist. The campaign encourages visitors to share photos of their Australia holidays, with the 1,001 photos judged the best being featured on their new website.

As well as this the state has a job as ‘Taste Master’ included as one of the Best Jobs in the World campaign run by Tourism Australia. The job plays on the region's reputation as a food and wine destination, with the lucky applicant required to eat their way around the state, testing out the best bars, restaurants, cafes and wineries. But if you fancy the challenge you'll need to be quick - entries close in less than a fortnight.
