In an industry first, Flight Centre will this weekend launch an Augmented Reality experience at Travel Expo in Auckland. Offering customers the chance to ‘board’ an ‘Air New Zealand’ plane and virtually transport themselves to a destination overseas.

The new experience is a next step from virtual reality, which Flight Centre launched in select stores during 2016.

Rather than completely simulating a different environment, augmented reality integrates and enhances the real world. The Flight Centre Augmented Reality experience can be accessed via Facebook or Snapchat mobile apps.

Brands are increasingly utilising augmented reality to educate and inspire their customers and Flight Centre is the first travel retailer in New Zealand to introduce such technology in an expo environment.

Flight Centre NZ managing director, David Coombes, says of the initiative, "the introduction of this new technology is really exciting as it allows our customers to take a digital step inside destinations around the globe.”

Coombes says the technology will by no means replace travel, “nothing can beat actually visiting a destination and experiencing the sights, smells and culture, but it is a fantastic way for us to help our customers in the dreaming and planning phase.

This is important for us as travel retailers as we don’t have a tangible product on our shelves; the technology provides our customers a way to 'try before they buy' and get excited about destinations they may not have considered."

Flight Centre has worked with Plattar, an augmented reality pioneer, on the new technology. Since 2012 Plattar has been working with businesses to create new product experiences for customers.

Founder, Rupert Deans, said it has been great to work with a leader who understands the power of AR to bring immersive, but also accessible, experiences to their audience. We look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of immersive travel experiences into the future.

Travel Expo is on at ASB Showgrounds this Saturday and Sunday from 9am – 4pm. Showgoers will be able to try the new experience in designated Discovery Zones exploring the South Pacific, UK & Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas and Cruising.

Upon ‘boarding' the ‘travel portal’, users can take part in a competition to find a red Flight Centre ticket wallet and go in the draw to win return airfares for two to any Air New Zealand short haul destination.
