Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Barcelona Whatever your opinion about form over function, you'll have to admit that Gaudi made an impression on Barcelona with his modernist architecture. Do you love it or hate it? While you're here, stroll the Ramblas shopping avenue and visit the Gothic Quarter, or stop at a Benedictine monastery, and contemplate the bizarre works of Picasso at a museum dedicated only to him.
  • Day 2 - At Sea
  • Day 3 - Civitavecchia (Rome) In the footsteps of the Ceasar you will spend your time in the Eternal City. From the Roman Forum, it's a short walk to the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and Palatine Hill. Across the Tiber River, the Sovereign State of the Vatican holds the key to the Sistine Chapel and Bernini's awesome colonnade.
  • Day 4 - At Sea
  • Day 5 - Katakolon In the quiet of the original Olympic stadium, where the torch was first lit and the winners were crowned with a laurel wreath, let your imagination run. Step into the ruined archives of Greek mythology at the Temple of Zeus—one of the few remaining Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • Day 6 - Athens (Piraeus), Greece High above pulsating modern Athens, the serene Acropolis reigns as it has for 25 centuries. Gaze on the timeless majesty of the marble-columned Parthenon. Down in the city, snap a photo of the colorfully-costumed Evzone guards at Constitution Square; go shopping for souvenirs, silver jewellry and bright flotaki rugs.
  • Day 7 - Kusadasi Ephesus, not far from the port at Kusadasi, is home to the one remaining pillar from the Temple of Artemis—an Ancient Wonder of the World. Marble streets lead past magnificent ruins of temples and baths, and the Celsus Library. Don't miss the amphitheater where St Paul preached to the Ephesians. Roman ruins are also on display at Pirea and Didyma.
  • Day 8 - At Sea
  • Day 9 - Catania An astrophysical observatory, dedicated solely to recording information about the sun, is located in Catania. The warm climate and clear air of Sicily lends itself not only to this practice, but also to the practice of shopping and strolling in the streets of the charming township.
  • Day 10 - Valletta Thick sandstone walls fortify Valletta, holding within its stone streets and glorious architecture. It fees like a travesty, walking over the detailed inlaid marble floors of the the cathedrals, but they are there to be seen and appreciated. The Silent City is Mdina, on the far side of the island, where no cars are permitted to disrupt the serene streets. Keep an eye out for the legendary, aged yellow buses of Malta which appear to be on their last legs, but are in fact a revered and flawlessly maintained piece of Maltese heritage.
  • Day 11 - Palermo, Sicily Territory of the legendary Godfather, Sicily has hosted many film crews, and Palermo in particular is home to the Opera House where Al Pacino's character met his Waterloo in the Godfather III. Also in Palermo are a Spanish church with a Moorish cloister and a cathedral whose electic facade speaks volumes about all those who came, saw and conquered. Enjoy it all as you would the caponata—sweet and tangy and, not surprisingly, delicious.
  • Day 12 - At Sea
  • Day 13 - Barcelona Whatever your opinion about form over function, you'll have to admit that Gaudi made an impression on Barcelona with his modernist architecture. Do you love it or hate it? While you're here, stroll the Ramblas shopping avenue and visit the Gothic Quarter, or stop at a Benedictine monastery, and contemplate the bizarre works of Picasso at a museum dedicated only to him.
  • Day 14 - Palma de Mallorca Floating gemlike off Spain's Mediterranean Riviera, these islands offer you pearls, pottery and perfectly sublime sandy beaches. Visit Valldemosa, where George Sand and Frederic Chopin spent a romantic winter in 1838.
  • Day 15 - Cartagena, Spain One of the principal ports of antiquity, Cartagena is your portal to the province of Murcia, famous for its prized rice, Calasparra. Paella, anyone?
  • Day 16 - Malaga Málaga is your chance to tour to the Moorish wonders of the Alhambra with its elaborate carvings, grand columns and delicate arches. Stalagmites and stalactites reach calcite fingers into the caverns of Nerja, near Malaga. 30,000 years ago, people lived in the shadowy recesses of these caves. In nearby Mijas, shop tables are laden with hand-made ceramics, and the people live in shuttered, whitewashed cottages.
  • Day 17 - Cadiz (Seville) Visit the town's historical centre, then head for Jerez de Frontera, the sherry capital of the world, or to Seville, famed for flamenco and the exquisite Alcazar Palace. Sample shore excursion: Cádiz, Sherry & Horses.
  • Day 18 - Lisbon Find your way in the city that launched the Age of Discovery. Cross the River Tagus on its soaring suspension bridge, watched over by a colossal statue of Christ. Wander the maze of streets in the Alfama, the old Moorish quarter, dominated by the medieval Castle of St George where peacocks strut and shriek. Stroll the Baixa and refuse to leave without a pair of elegant shoes.
  • Day 19 - At Sea
  • Day 20 - Funchal, Madeira Glide down a mountainside in a giant wicker sleigh; sip a glass of Madeira wine; browse the shops for lace and colorful flowers. Funchal is anything but ordinary.
  • Day 21 - At Sea
