This thriving harbor is your gateway to the Nazca Lines geoglyphs, the ancient spires of Macchu Picchu, and the port of Pisco. Visit the Paracas National Reserve, a refuge for seals, penguins, flamingos and more.   • Day 17 - Antofagasta Surrounded by the steep hills of Chile's coastal mountain range, the port city of Antofagasta lies along the Pacific Ocean. Part of the Atacama Desert, it is among the driest areas on the planet. The spectacular cliffs and rock formations are a hallmark of this seaside town, and one of the most famous, La Portada, lies to the north. A natural archway of rock in the ocean, it is a landmark of Chile and this magical area. In the city, tour El Barrio Historico, where you can observe several national monuments to the town's rich and storied mining history. Take a break in Plaza Colon, where you may catch a local band of musicians playing near the Torre del Reloj, a replica of London's famous Big Ben. Explore the gothic cathedral and historic theater, or venture outside the city to see the Milestone to the Tropic of Capricorn.

To reflect the literary lore associated with the island, the Chilean government named the location Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. Today the island is a World Biosphere Reserve and home to the Magellanic Penguin and Juan Fernández Firecrown, an endangered red hummingbird.

Choose a gentle bayside beach or dramatic Atlantic beach with perfect surfing waves; explore the colonial and modern architecture of downtown and shop for local treasures; and visit Casa del Pueblo – a modern art museum that was once the home of celebrated Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro.
