Cruise activities & entertainment onboard

First time cruisers sometimes fear that they may get bored on their cruise. And there is that possibility of course, as with any holiday, but with so many cruise activities onboard, chances are you're more likely to end up exhausted than boredl! In fact, you'll probably need to pencil in some time for rest and relaxation into your hectic schedule...

What cruise activities are available?

The range of cruise activities available onboard most cruise ships is extensive. On larger ocean-going cruises you'll usually find activities such as swimming, exercise classes, computer training, art auctions, photography classes, dance lessons, shuffleboard, basketball and tennis, to name but a few. Other possible cruise activities include attending lectures on the culture, history, flora and fauna of the region you're cruising in, or perhaps even learning some tips on cooking the regional fare. And if the likes of bingo, trivia quizzes, crafts and board games are more your speed, you're also catered for.

What cruise facilities are typically available?

Facilities onboard the ship may include anything from a day spa, gym and sauna to wave-riding pools, cinemas, ice-skating rinks, mini-golf courses, ten-pin bowling alleys and rock climbing walls. Of course the kids are looked after too: dedicated child and teen facilities offer hangouts and activities geared to the younger set.

For night owls, every night on a cruise ship is an entertainment spectacular. Consider your ship a floating capital city, with nightclubs, movies, live music, themed parties, magic, comedy, cabaret, Broadway and West End-style shows and casinos to keep everyone entertained. If you're after something a little quieter, sit back and relax in one of the many cosy lounges and bars on your ship, enjoying cocktails, the talent of a live pianist and some quiet conversation.

Still think you could get bored?

Of course there's no pressure to join in any organised activities or social events during your cruise: it's your choice to do as much or as little as you please on your holiday.

Cruise activities schedules

Generally there will be all kinds of 'goodies' in your cabin when you first arrive on your ship. These will include a program of on-board activities that is generally updated on a daily basis: a new copy is placed in your cabin each night to show you exactly what you can participate in the following day.

To get your bearings on the ship, it's a good idea to go exploring prior to sailing, that way you'll know exactly where to find facilities such as the gym, theatre, dining rooms, lounges, casinos and nightclubs for when you need them!
