Q. My husband and I have planned a San Francisco holiday on our two-day stopover; what would be the absolute ‘must-do’s’ given the short time frame?
Flight Centre Timaru’s Megan Heslop loves holidaying in San Francisco and shares her top must-do’s.
A. San Francisco is the perfect stopover destination and two days is definitely enough time to take in the highlights, but you'll be very busy! My top three must-do's are the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and Chinatown.
Walking over the Golden Gate Bridge is a great option so you can take in the sights and the fresh air, although bare in mind that it is 3km long so if walking there and back you'll need to allow a bit of time.
My personal San Francisco highlight was Alcatraz, which used to be home to some of the world’s most notorious criminals. It’s very popular so you will need to book at least three weeks in advance. When you arrive, pick up an audio guide so you can wander around listening to all the stories and secrets.
Chinatown is a top tourist attraction and is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia. Make sure you go hungry; there are plenty of tea houses and restaurants to choose from!
Height Street is also worth a visit if you have time, for its boutique shopping, stylish cafes and Victorian style homes.
Seafood lovers won't want to miss Fishermans Wharf or Pier 39 for a meal of fresh seafood. Try the local clam chowder served in freshly baked cob bread, finished off with a glass of wine from the Napa Valley. This is also a great spot to pick up some souvenirs to take home with you.
When it comes to getting around San Francisco, I would recommend purchasing a 48 hour hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus which provides a cost-effective way to see the sights.
