What's a Canada holiday without visiting the iconic alpine playground Whistler? Charlie McIntosh from Flight Centre Auckland shares his tips for a cool Whistler experience.
Victoria is just so cute and Vancouver has great shopping and food, but Whistler has so much to do for sporty outdoors travellers that it's a must-visit for all travellers to Canada.
If you're flying into Vancouver, a great way to get from there to Whistler is via the Rocky Mountaineer train. As well as nice big seats and a good food and wine selection, there's also an excellent commentary with plenty of warning about when to get your camera/phone handy to take snaps of the awesome Canada scenery.
Once at Whistler, the zip lining is a brilliant activity. It's run by the very professional Zip Trek Eco Tour and and we felt completely safe in their hands.
The Whistler Peak to Peak Gondola Experience was also a lot of fun, even in summer (when we went) with no snow. They tell you where the bears hang out so you can keep an eye open for them; we managed to spot one while we were there.
There are a few accommodation options available, but I'd recommend the Delta Suites Whistler. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite, which was very spacious with a nice kitchen, 2 bathrooms, balcony, flatscreen TVs and fireplace - everything a family could need on holiday.
A great option for skiers, they provide storage for ski gear and have a fab location in town with everything in walking or skiing distance.
The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a more up-market resort about 20 minutes walk from the village. As well as large rooms, there is a good range of leisure facilities on site to relax in after a day on the slopes, including a large heated pool, spa tubs and several dining outlets, like a cheap deli downstairs for yummy sandwiches.
