Vegas, known as a city to have fun! From casinos and hotels to world class broadway shows and productions, Las Vegas is a must when visiting the United States! Nadia Gouws from our Royal Oak store shares her must sees and dos in the City of Second Chances.

Las Vegas offers really something for everyone. You will be constantly stimulated by your surroundings, one of the few holiday spots where your hotel really is your destination, the next does it bigger and better than the last. The weather is always good and you cannot NOT have a good time! Try all of the resorts. Have breakfast at your own hotel, but venture out for lunch and dinner...you will get to see and experience more.

The properties are quite big and the distance between them can be quite vast, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for lots of walking.  Walk the strip in the early morning - it will be quite cool and the hustle and bustle that is Vegas has not kicked in yet. You will get to see all the amazing structures from the Luxor Pyramid all the way to the Venetian canal.

Watch at least one major show. The different hotels offer different Cirque du Soleil shows with theatres purpose built for these - marvel at the athleticism of the performers and the depth and at times darkness of the storyline.

Take the Zipline down Fremont Street - a great and inexpensive way to get a thrill and a unique view of the shows projected on the roof of this old part of Vegas. The light show starts at 7pm every night - the atmosphere will be electric with live bands and several animated creatures willing to take pictures with you. Buy a Drink holder - you can refill at any bar at half the original cost!

A great way to spend an evening is by seeing the Treasure Island Pirate show from street-front - watch the girls sink the boys' ship and all the amazing visual effects to make this seem very real. The show goes hourly until late. The volcano outside the Mirage is also very spectacular and do not forget the Mardi Gras at the Rio starting at 4pm every night. Finish off your evening of free shows by visiting the famed fountains at the Bellagio.

Take a helicopter ride of the strip at night. See all the sparkly lights and the Luxor's beam (visible from space) from this very unique vantage point and get the most amazing photographs to capture your memories!

Vegas is known as the buffet town - it would be very hard to beat the selection at the Wynn! Make a reservation and treat yourself to dinner here!

Get out of the City and visit on of the seven natural wonders of the world - the Grand Canyon. Make a day of it and get to know about the Hualapia people, venture out over the skywalk at Eagle Point looking through the glass at the chasm below you. Incorporate a visit to the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the Joshua Tree Forest.

General tips:

  • Always have photo ID with you, even if your drink is virgin you will be asked for identification, and for entrance into restaurants and bars.
  • Carry a bottle of water with you everywhere you go - it is a dry heat so you will not notice becoming dehydrated.
  • Drinks are free whenever you gamble - even on the slot machines!!
  • Minimum table bets go up on the weekends, so if you are simply looking to try your hand do so mid-week.
  • Food is cheap, but be aware the portion sizes can get astonishingly huge!
  • Take advantage of the monorail where you can - it will cut down on the distances you walk giving you more time to enjoy yourself.
  • Suncreen is must in Las Vegas - take care of your skin!
  • Get into the little things - Visit the MnM's store and get personalised MnM's as souvenirs for all the folks back home! This great and quirky store will let you write personal messages on your MnM's making the perfect gift for all the amazing people you had to leave at home.
  • Also visit the Coca Cola store and try a "Round the World" platter. At around $7 you get to try all the different Coke flavours and products from around the world. With a marked guide you are sure to have a fun time rating all the flavours, cooling down and hydrating at the same time!

Las Vegas for first timers is great, but it is simply one of those destinations that you would not mind visiting again and again!
