A romantic break, family adventure or girls weekend? If you're planning on a Melbourne holiday, Candice van den Bos from Flight Centre Auckland shares her top picks for where to stay.

Hotel Ibis Melbourne

Close to Queen Victoria Markets and the Old Melbourne Goal, this is the nicest of the Ibis hotels in Melbourne. Clean, tidy and modern, it's also quiet as trams don’t operate on the road – although they're still close enough that travellers can easily access the free tram and other public transport. While there's no pool, gym or room service, this is still a good option for families or groups on a budget.

Crown Promenade Hotel

This lovely Melbourne hotel is 6 years old and great for couples or a girls shopping weekend. There's the whole range of leisure facilities available in the broader Crown complex, but as well as this are an indoor heated pool, gym and fitness classes, restaurant and iPod docks in some rooms.

Rendezvous Grand Hotel Melbourne

This heritage listed property has hit a century - it's a hundred years old! Close to Southbank, it's an easy walk to the casino and Flinders Station. Deluxe rooms have a media hub connected to the TV so you can connect your laptop to the TV. There's also a bar and restaurant to keep you fuelled up while travelling.

Sofitel Melbourne on Collins

This is a classic 5* hotel dating back to 1981. You'll sleep well at this hotel with the fancy Sofitel MyBeds with 6inch layer of goose down on top of the bed. There are floor to ceiling windows everywhere – even in the bathrooms! Enjoy a great Mai Tai cocktail at the Atrium Bar or overlook the city with great views in the No.35 Restaurant.

Crown Towers

The Crown Towers has a very grand entrance – you definitely know you are in a 5* property when you walk in. There's plenty to see and do, including massive indoor heated pool, tennis courts, day spa, restaurants and bars, shopping and the casino – great for travellers who don’t want to leave the Crown complex and are looking to splash out a little.
