Melbourne Information

Melbourne is tha capital of Victoria and regarded as the most European flavoured Australian city. It is a melting pot of multiculturalism with a wide variety of influences and cultures resulting in a complex and sophisticated blend. Melbourne is a thriving and character filled capital, which embraces art, music and culture with gusto. It is friendly and full of life and has the most sports mad population of any city in Australia.

Melbournians love their city for it's cosmopolitan lifestyle. It has a huge range of fabulous and eclectic restaurants, eateries and cafes, night-life which is second to none, scores of galleries, museums and performance spaces and probably the best shopping in the country.

A holiday in Victoria's capital has limitless opportunities for fun and activity - for the young and young at heart there is the Aquarium or the famous Melbourne Zoo. Take a ride to the top of Eureka Tower for incredible views across the city atop one of the world highest residential developments. Huge elegant parks and gardens are an opportunity to take a rest, or you can stroll the walkways alongside the Yarra River, stopping off for an espresso coffee when you need to revive.

Around the suburbs, Melbourne is equally impressive. A collection of unique and interesting suburbs and neighbourhoods contribute to the cities reputation as seriously hip. Most are easily reached by the city's famous trams and each has its own style and character. Down by the water, St Kilda is slightly bohemian and a perennial favourite for locals and visitors, it's a great spot for a relaxing drink in a beer garden on a hot summers day or a leisurely stroll down the amazing Acland Street where dozens of cake shops and cafes line the street. The streets of Richmond are some of the best places in Australia for clothes shopping while Carlton's Lygon Street is a national institution for Italian food. Head down beside the waters of Port Philip Bay in Williamstown or stroll the retro boutiques of Fitzroy, it would take a long time to run out of places to explore in Melbourne.

Melbourne is also the spiritual home of Australian Rules Football and on any given weekend in winter huge crowds gather at stadiums all around the city to worship their local teams as they compete in the National league. The Melbourne Cup is held in Flemington each year in November and is known as the "race that stops a nation" such is its popularity. Melbournites love almost any sport and the Melbourne Cricket Ground is among the worlds top venues for cricket with the boxing day text regularly drawing a crowd of near to 100,000.

The weather in Melbourne has been the butt of many jokes, and the saying "four seasons in one day" is no exageration. It's a good idea to take a coat or an umbrella when heading out for any length of time as the temperature can plunge suddenly or you may find yourself soaked to the skin on what started out as a fine warm day.

Melbourne is one of the world's great cities - discover it for yourself in all it's guises.
