Jamaica is a Caribbean nation famous for its tropical climate, beautiful beaches, world-class resorts, and relaxed lifestyle. Roughly 600 miles (960 km) south of Miami, Jamaica is a mountainous island approximately the size of Connecticut.

Although the island has been occupied for several thousand years, it was claimed for Spain by Columbus in 1494 and later taken over by the British. Under British rule, Jamaica became one of the world's leading producers of sugar, thanks primarly to its tropical climate and large population of African slave laborers.
