At one with nature
Experiencing Austria’s natural surrounds is an absolute must when visiting, as the country is renowned as having some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. A range of touring options are available to discover the alpine and countryside, from boating throughout the magical Salzkammergut Lake District, to tackling Tyrol’s Eagle Walk – the longest hiking path in Europe.
Cycling tours are a popular option with The Danube Cycle Path running alongside the river while incorporating visits at cultural sites, ancient castles and quaint villages. In the winter months you can discover the surrounds skiing and sledding through the alpine in Innsbruck, or ice-skating on Lake Zell in the Austrian Alps.
Wine time in Austria
You don’t need to venture off the beaten path to find world-class vineyards in Austria. You will encounter many terraced wineries along the Danube, offering flavoursome wines and gourmet cuisine.
A unique way to explore the vineyards in Vienna is aboard the hop-on hop-off Heurigen Express that runs on the funicular railway. Take in panoramic views of the city, mountains and ancient farmhouses along the way, and hop off to visit the many surrounding wineries and taverns. Vienna also hosts the annual Vienna Wine Hiking Day, where you can walk through private vineyards with regular stops for wine tastings and culinary treats.
