Flight Centre is encouraging Kiwis to put their out of office on - with a dream holiday up for grabs, as new research reveals more than half aren’t taking four weeks’ annual leave a year.

The survey of 1000 Kiwis, has revealed more than half (59 per cent) didn’t take four weeks’ annual leave over a twelve-month period. Gen Z and Millennials were least likely to take four weeks, with 45 per cent taking less than four weeks.

Flight Centre is here to change that and is giving away a $10,000 dream holiday as part of its ‘out of office’ campaign, designed to help Kiwis relax, unwind and connect with family and friends.

Heidi Walker, GM of Flight Centre New Zealand said while Kiwis see the value in taking time away from the office, with busy lives it can be hard to plan ahead.

“We know it can be tricky to plan time off — busy schedules, work commitments, and family logistics all play a part, but it is a great opportunity to reset, unwind and connect with loved ones.

“When asked about the different ways people use their annual leave, we found 61 per cent used their leave to head away on holiday, while 28 per cent used it for practical reasons like school holidays.

“We also found a third of those surveyed were saving up their days off to go on a big trip the following year.

“What was evident across the board is how Kiwis use holidays to support their wellbeing – with 96 per cent of those surveyed saying annual leave was key to supporting their mental health.”

Ross Larsen, leader of Healthwise NZ, Flight Centre’s internal health and wellness division, said prioritising annual leave isn’t just good for morale—it’s essential for long-term wellbeing.

“Taking regular breaks can help lower stress levels and improve overall physical and mental health,” said Larsen. “We see time and time again how people return from holidays more energised, more creative and with greater clarity. Rest is productive—it allows you to show up better at work and in life.”

Of those surveyed, Walker said nearly half planned to head overseas for a holiday, while others preferred to explore the hidden gems of our own backyard.

“In terms of where people are going these school holidays, it seems families are trying to escape the kiwi winter with London at the top of the list, possibly because people are using London as a starting point and then venturing on to other European cities.

“Also ranking high is Australia, Fiji, Singapore, Bali and The Philippines, it seems regardless of whether they’re going near or far, kiwis are trying to chase the sun and warmth.

These school holidays, Flight Centre are championing the importance of taking holidays by high-jacking people’s out of office email replies to advocate taking a break. Flight Centre are currently giving all Kiwis the chance to win a $10,000 holiday by adding a Flight Centre banner to their Out of Office email reply, taking a screenshot of it, and uploading it to Flight Centre’s website.

“This is our way of encouraging Kiwis to take the break they deserve. We know how important it is to rest, recharge and spend quality time with the people who matter most,” said Walker.

“Your annual leave is there for a reason — it’s time to use it.”
