Set to tie the knot in the near future and now having to plan out your honeymoon? Choosing a destination is tricky, however if you’re looking for something exotic then Thailand vs Vietnam honeymoon options are in abundance. We’re unpacking what each destination has to offer to help you choose which option is better suited for your romantic rendezvous.

Thailand

If you’re a fan of The White Lotus, then Thailand will surely be top of mind for you at the moment. From the gorgeous Khao Yai National Park and white-sanded beaches of Koh Samui, to the vibrant capital of Bangkok, Thailand is a Southeast Asian destination that is steeped in rich culture and amazing natural wonders

When to visit

Depending on when your wedding is, and which part of Thailand you wish to honeymoon in, it can be a year-round destination! Usually, the best time to visit Thailand is usually during its colder, drier seasons - think November to February. Not only does it offer a more palatable temperature, but also coincides with lower rainfall and is ideal for sightseeing. If you’re looking at the east coast, however, along the Gulf of Thailand, then it usually sees its best weather from April to September.

How long to Stay

If it’s your first time to Thailand, then 10-14 days is generally considered a generous amount of time to ensure you see the sights and don’t feel too rushed. Thailand resorts are world-class for luxury and rejuvenation, and you’ll be sure to leave refreshed!

Where to Stay

Thailand is dotted with luxurious retreats and resorts, all designed to maximise your relaxation and rejuvenation. After a busy wedding season and dealing with all the stress that comes along with it, you’ll be wanting a resort that offers you the opportunity to explore and have fun, whilst also getting downtime to rejuvenate.

Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket

Experience unparalleled luxury along the sands of Karon Beach, with a resort that is designed around you relaxing and avoiding the crowds. This haven boasts elegantly appointed rooms set amidst spectacular gardens and uninterrupted views of the Andaman Sea. By day you can take your pick of the four swimming pools, step from resort to sand to experience the beach and float in the ocean, or indulge with food and cocktails at the onsite restaurants and bars.

Let your inner child run loose at the expansive waterparks and slides, soak up the sun poolside, or enjoy the world-class spa, where you can massage out all your worldly woes side-by-side with your loved one. By night you’ll dine excellently at the restaurants, before falling into a blissful sleep in your comfortable room!

The Lamai Samui

Overlooking pristine waters of the east coast of Koh Samui, the Lamai Samui reinvigorates an oriental heritage village surrounded by lush gardens and backed by forested mountains. Staying in a Plunge Pool Suite, you’ll have a spectacular sanctuary that will make your honeymoon feel extra special. Seamlessly nestled between your bedroom and separate bathroom, you’ll find your own outdoor private plunge pool! Boasting invigorating jets and room to move, it’s the perfect way to have some intimate quiet time. Plus, you can literally get up from your bed and jump straight in the pool!

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

Koh Samui’s Four Seasons Resort was the feature resort of The White Lotus in Thailand, and is a masterclass in hotel and resort design. This expansive sanctuary in paradise is both incredibly popular and deeply intimate and private, offering you plenty of room and space to spend time as a couple. Stroll along the private beach, take a yacht trip through the islands, recentre yourself at the Secret Garden Spa, dine and watch performances at the numerous restaurants, or simply immerse yourself in the stunning natural environment cultivated by the resort. Each room is well appointed, comfortable and designed to support how you wish to holiday! If you want something extra romantic, consider having a private chef cater to you in your village, or bring the spa treatment to your room with a wellness visit!

What to Eat

If you’re looking for delicious Thai food, then you’re in luck. From bustling markets catered by locals to iconic restaurants and cafes, you’ll find Thai food favourites and new flavours throughout the country.

  • On every island, keep an eye out for markets being run by locals and see what they have to offer. Markets are one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the eating culture of a country. Nang Leong Market is a veritable street-long feast with everything from green curries to grilled Thai sausage and is a flavour sensation.
  • For some classic dishes, keep an eye out for Pad Thai, Beef Noodle Soup, or Tom Yum Noodles. Khao Soi is also highly recommended - a Thai Coconut Curry Noodle Soup that packs layers of flavours in the broth!

Vietnam

Known for its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas and bustling cities, Vietnam sits on the coast of the South China Sea. Experience Vietnamese culture as you explore ancient towns, immerse yourself in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and craft a spiritual and meaningful trip. From vast rainforests, to beautiful tiered rice farms, to vibrant and dynamic cityscapes, Vietnam has it all! Fall in love with this Southeast Asian destination as you explore what it has to offer.

When to visit

It varies, depending on your objective! If you’re looking to avoid crowds and have a more relaxed visit, then April to June and September to November are best for avoiding large groups of tourists. If you seek to explore Vietnam’s beaches then July and August will be best for you - however these are also the peak of their hot, sticky, summer season. December to March is best for visiting Ho Chi Minh city as the climate tends to be cooler and drier meaning it’s an ideal time to take in the sights of the city.

Do keep in mind that Vietnam does have a typhoon season. Whilst this technically stretches from May to November each year, August and September post the biggest risk of storms. Plan accordingly in travelling around this time, pay close attention to local weather reports and consider including insurance coverage in your booking.

How long to Stay

It’s recommended that you stay for a minimum of 10 days to get a good experience of Vietnam - especially if you’re planning to mostly stay around your hotel or resort. Depending on what you’re wanting to do as part of your honeymoon - i.e. explore more of the nation or visit neighbouring nations, you may want to extend this for up to 3 weeks, to ensure you cover everything off.

Where to Stay

As a popular tourist destination, Vietnam knows how to do high quality stays. From Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh, and everything in between, you’ll find elaborately decorated and detailed resorts and hotels to help you craft a magical holiday.

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay

Uncover idyllic and luxurious relaxation from a beach resort that is designed to give you an illusionist island escape! Sitting on a dramatic bay looking out across the East Vietnam Sea, the resort is accessible only by boat and sits beneath a towering backdrop of mountains and natural forests. At the resort, you’ll stay comfortably in well appointed and detailed rooms that are perfect for rounding out the day. Consider adding in a traditional bamboo massage complete with a Reiki Crystal facial, or take things up a notch with a romantic sunset drinks-and-canapes cruise across the harbour. Oh, and keep your eyes on the trees. You might just be lucky enough to spot the troop of very shy endangered monkeys that call the resort home!

Wyndham Hoi An Royal Beachfront Resort & Villas

Set along the beach, mere steps from the sea, this resort is luxurious at every turn, and perfect for a refined honeymoon you’ll remember forever. Nestled along An Bang Beach, with a front yard that comprises a white sand beach and sparkling sapphire waters, this is a location that will take your breath away! Nab yourself a Deluxe Ocean View room to awaken to the sound of the rolling tide each morning and then spend your days however you see fit! Get a romantic massage for two, lounge by the pool and soak up the sun, or treat yourself to one of the many packages they have on offer. Get a wellness package for a full day of pampering for you and your spouse, or enjoy the private experience package which gives you daily complimentary minibar treats, and a private BBQ evening in your villa!

Sofitel Saigon Plaza

5-star luxury in the heart of Ho Chi Minh city. Boasting chic, contemporary designed and pure French styles to artfully conjure up a modern and exclusive retreat. This retreat is tucked away in a quiet enclave of the prestigious Le Duan Boulevard but don’t let this fool you. You’ll be minutes away from world-class shopping and cultural experiences as well as attractions like the Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, the Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. For couples looking to experience something unique, the exquisite suite offering sees you experience the height of luxury, complete with a romantic dinner for two. Sofitel Saigon also boasts a range of amazing restaurants and bars, wellness treatments and experiences, and uniquely romantic ways to ensure you get to create memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime!

What to Eat

Similar to other destinations, if you hunt like a local you’ll find the best spots to eat and drink. Whilst your resort is likely to have places to eat, we recommend chatting to the staff at your resort, and seeing what they recommend. As locals, and being familiar with recommending to tourists, they’ll know where to go and where to avoid!

  • Markets, again, are worth their weight in gold as they give you a chance to try out local flavours and discover new dishes! The Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi is a popular destination with locals and tourists alike, offering you a blend of traditional market shopping and culinary creations.
  • For something romantic, seek out the Six Senses Ninh Van Bay - a private dining experience set in a cave. Formerly used as a wine cellar, the Six Senses hotel has extended this area and opened it up for the exclusive use of couples on their honeymoon to have a romantic meal. A simply magical way to dine together.
