What to Do in Uluru: Five Experiences Worth Travelling For

Easily one of the most breathtaking and spectacular destinations I have visited in my life. As soon as we stepped off the plane, you could feel the sacredness of the Red Centre and I felt genuinely blessed to be there. This place doesn’t just look extraordinary, it feels extraordinary. The landscape, the silence, the ancient stories held in every rock face. It’s unlike anywhere else on earth.

The spiritual heartbeat and sacredness of Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṫa can be truly felt through Aṉangu Tjukuṛpa, creation stories and the rich culture of the traditional owners.

As a Flight Centre Marketing Manager, I’ve been lucky enough to travel widely, but the Red Centre in Australia stopped me in my tracks. So if you’re wondering what to do in Uluru, how to experience Kata Tjuta properly, or how to plan a trip that genuinely does this destination justice, here are the five experiences I’d recommend without hesitation.

“Let the knowledge you hear come through your ears, into your mind, and settle in your heart.”

1. Kata Tjuta Sunset with Sparkling Wine and Nibbles

What is it? A half-day guided tour to the 36 domes of Kata Tjuta, timed to arrive as the sun begins its descent.

Kata Tjuta is often described as the hidden gem of Central Australia and honestly, after being there at sunset, I completely understand why. The scale of those ancient domes is hard to comprehend until you’re standing in front of them. They were once thought to have been a single enormous rock, much like Uluru, slowly shaped over millions of years into the intriguing series of formations you see today.

What made this experience so special was how alive the landscape felt as the light changed. Each passing minute brought something new, the ochre deepening to crimson, shadows shifting and stretching across the ridges. No photograph does it justice. I promise you that.

Your driver guide brings the natural and cultural history of the region to life throughout the scenic outback drive, and sparkling wine and nibbles are served as the sun melts into the horizon. It’s the perfect, gentle first experience of the Red Centre, one that sets the tone beautifully for everything that follows.

Good to know: Low fitness required. Departs approximately 90 minutes before sunset from Ayers Rock Resort.

2.  Uluru Sunrise and Kata Tjuta Walk

What is it? A half-day tour combining the iconic Uluru sunrise with a guided walk through Walpa Gorge at Kata Tjuta.

If you only do one morning experience in the Red Centre, this is the one. I won’t pretend the alarm wasn’t painful, but the moment the first light began to touch Uluru, every second of it was worth it. The rock moves through colours that don’t feel real: charcoal to violet to a blazing, burning red, all in the space of a few minutes. Standing in that silence, watching an ancient landscape come to life, I found myself completely speechless.

After sunrise (tea, coffee and biscuits thankfully included), the tour heads 45 kilometres to Kata Tjuta for the Walpa Gorge walk, a path between sheer rock walls that feels like stepping into another world. Rare plant species and lush evergreen scrubs line the gorge, and your accredited local guide gives real depth and context to everything you’re seeing. The Anangu connection to this place is felt at every step.

Good to know: Moderate fitness. Departs 90 minutes before sunrise. A Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Pass is required and can be added on at booking.

3.  Uluru Sacred Sites and Sunset with BBQ Dinner Under the Stars

What is it? A half-day afternoon tour around the base of Uluru, its sacred sites, ancient rock art and the tranquil Mutitjulu Waterhole, finishing with a spectacular sunset and optional BBQ dinner.

This is Uluru up close and personal, and it’s where the cultural depth of this place really sank in for me. Rather than viewing the rock from a distance, you travel around its base with your driver guide who shares the Anangu Tjukurpa, the ancient creation stories of the traditional owners. Hearing those stories while standing in the landscape they describe is genuinely moving.

The Mutitjulu Waterhole is a highlight: peaceful, ancient, and unlike anything I’d expected. The Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre is also well worth the time. Sparkling wine and light snacks are served as Uluru turns molten gold at sunset, and I found myself not wanting it to end.

The optional BBQ dinner upgrade is something I’d strongly encourage. As darkness falls, you stay on to dine under a canopy of outback stars with Uluru silhouetted against the night sky. I’ve had a lot of lovely dinners in my time, but nothing quite like that. Nothing even close.

Good to know: Leisurely fitness. Departs 2:30pm (April to October) and 3:00pm (November to March).

4. Field of Light and Uluru Sunrise with Breakfast

What is it? A pre-dawn guided tour through Bruce Munro’s celebrated Field of Light installation, followed by sunrise over Uluru.

This one requires the earliest alarm of your trip. It is also, without question, one of the most extraordinary things I have ever experienced.

Internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro first visited Uluru in the Northern Territory over 30 years ago, and was so moved by the landscape that he imagined filling the desert with light. The result is Field of Light: more than 50,000 slender stems, each topped with a frosted glass sphere, spread across a remote desert area within sight of Uluru. Walking through them in the darkness before dawn, they glow like a galaxy that’s quietly landed in the outback.

Your local guide explains the story behind the installation as you move through it, and the whole experience builds slowly and beautifully toward the moment the sun rises. Uluru and Kata Tjuta emerge on the horizon together as the spheres begin to fade with the growing light. Tea and coffee are served from a private dune as the day begins. I had goosebumps the entire time.

Good to know: Leisurely fitness. Departs approximately 105 minutes before sunrise. No National Park Pass required for this tour.

5.  Wintjiri Wiru, Drone Show and Picnic

What is it? A world-first cultural storytelling experience, bringing the ancient Mala story to life through 1,200 choreographed drones, lasers and projections above Uluru.

Wintjiri Wiru means ‘beautiful view out to the horizon’ in the local Pitjantjatjara language and that name absolutely earns itself. I’ll be direct: I have never seen anything like this in my life, and I don’t expect I will again anywhere else.

Co-created with the Anangu Working Group, this is the first time an Indigenous story has been told through drone and laser technology at this scale, performed on a regular basis anywhere in the world. The Anangu describe it as “a gift to the world,” and sitting beneath 1,200 drones forming the shapes and characters of the Mala story against the desert sky, you understand exactly why they mean that. It is simultaneously ancient and extraordinary.

The experience begins with sunset cocktails or a gourmet picnic hamper as dusk settles. Then the sky simply comes alive. Packages range from the Twilight and After Dark options through to the full Sunset Dinner, with Australian wine, cheese and desserts throughout. Whichever option you choose, do not skip this one.

Good to know: Suitable for all ages.

Planning Your Red Centre Trip

The Red Centre deserves at least three full days, more if you can manage it. Each of the experiences above can be booked through your Travel Expert so chat to them about putting together a full package covering your flights, accommodation and tours. Having someone take care of the logistics means you arrive ready to be present, which in a destination like this, makes all the difference.

A Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Pass (valid for three consecutive days) is required for most land-based tours and can be added on at booking.

The Red Centre isn’t a place you visit once and tick off a list. It’s a place that quietly rearranges something inside you. I left feeling deeply grateful, for the Anangu’s generosity in sharing their stories, for the stillness of that landscape, and for the privilege of being there. I’ll be back.

Ready to experience the Red Centre for yourself? Talk to a Flight Centre Travel Expert and we’ll take care of every detail.
