"Port" began as a penal settlement in 1821 and was known for its harsh punishment. Thankfully it's now a pleasure to visit. There are a host of family-friendly and surf beaches accessible from the well-kept town centre. It's home to Australia's only koala hospital and the Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park is at the edge of town.
Coastal walks fringe surrounding regional beaches and national parks and Cassegrain Wines is in the area. For an adrenalin buzz, experience a 200 kilometre/hour freefall at the vertical outdoor wind tunnel. Flights to Port Macquarie can be booked year-round with Flight Centre.
