Cheap Flights to Tokyo
What to know before you fly to Tokyo?
Walking the frenzied streets of modern Tokyo, it's hard to imagine that the city started life as a quaint fishing village called Edo. The city first attracted significant attention during the seventeenth century when Tokugawa Ieyasu as Shogun, made the city his base; spurring Edo on to become one the largest cities in the world by 1721 with a population of over one million people. It was Emperor Meiji who changed the name to Tokyo in 1868. Today the city is a financial hub and one of the great cities of contemporary society.
For a terrific view across the city, take the lift to the viewing platform of the Tokyo Tower. Visitors generally enjoy exploring the Asakusa temples including the serene Sensō-ji Temple, the Imperial Palace and the Meiji Shrine. Horticulturalists will revel in the bonsai collection in Bonsai Park, while art aficionados will enjoy the National Museum of Modern Art. For the family, consider visiting the Transportation Museum, the Tokyo Disney Resort consisting of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea and the Shinagawa Aquarium.
It would be remiss to visit Japan and not sample a traditional meal such as sushi or sashimi. The Tsukiji Fish Markets are fascinating. Shopping is also big business in the Japanese capital; consider checking out the Venus Fort that takes shopping opulence to the next level. For electronics, head to the Akihabara district. A boat trip on the Sumida River is a great way to spend an afternoon away from the city's frantic pace. You can explore these sights and more with our cheap flights to Tokyo.
