Frequently asked questions

Flights from the UK to Fiji take approximately 22–28 hours including at least one or two stopovers. There are no direct non-stop flights from the UK. Common routes go via Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Auckland, or Los Angeles. The total travel time varies significantly based on your connection cities and layover durations.

The best time to visit Fiji is during the dry season, from June to September, when the weather is sunny, humidity is lower, and rainfall is minimal. Temperatures are a pleasant 23–27°C. The shoulder months of May and October also offer good weather with fewer crowds. The wet season runs from November to April and brings heavy rain, higher humidity (28–31°C), and a risk of tropical cyclones — though sunshine is still common.

The main international airport is Nadi International Airport (NAN), located on the western coast of Viti Levu (Fiji's main island). Nadi is Fiji's primary gateway for all international arrivals and is approximately 9km from Nadi town. A second airport, Suva's Nausori Airport (SUV), handles limited international services. Many island resorts are accessed via domestic flights or ferry from Nadi.

The cheapest flights to Fiji from the UK are generally available during the wet season — January through March — when demand drops and fares fall. However, this is also the period with the highest chance of heavy rainfall and occasional cyclones. Late April to May and October to November are good compromise periods offering lower fares alongside more reliable weather.

Fiji is 12 hours ahead of the UK during Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). When the UK moves to British Summer Time (BST) in spring, the difference narrows to 11 hours ahead. Fiji does not observe Daylight Saving Time. This makes planning calls and keeping in touch with home relatively straightforward — midday in London is midnight in Fiji during UK winter.

English is one of Fiji's three official languages, alongside Fijian (iTaukei) and Fiji Hindi. English is used in government, education, and the tourism industry, making communication very easy for UK visitors throughout the country. Fijian locals are known for being exceptionally welcoming, and a simple 'Bula!' (hello) is always warmly received.

UK driving licence holders can drive in Fiji using their valid UK licence for up to 6 months. Fiji drives on the left, the same as the UK. Roads in major areas like Nadi and Suva are generally well-maintained, but rural roads can be rough or unpaved. Car hire is available in Nadi. Many visitors choose to rely on taxis, private resort transfers, or boat transport rather than self-driving, particularly on outer islands.

There are no non-stop direct flights from the UK to Fiji. All routes require at least one connecting stop. Common connections for UK passengers include Sydney (Qantas or Fiji Airways), Auckland (Air New Zealand or Fiji Airways), Singapore (Singapore Airlines), Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific), and Los Angeles (in conjunction with US carriers). The eastward route via Asia is popular and often offers competitive total journey times.

Airlines serving the UK–Fiji route include Fiji Airways (the national carrier, with connections from various Asian and Pacific hubs), Singapore Airlines (via Singapore), Qantas (via Sydney), Air New Zealand (via Auckland), and Cathay Pacific (via Hong Kong). Most UK passengers fly eastward through Asia or westward via the US.

British passport holders receive a free visitor permit on arrival in Fiji, valid for up to 4 months. You must hold a valid UK passport (with at least 6 months' validity beyond your stay), a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds. No advance visa application is required. Fiji is one of the most welcoming destinations for UK visitors in terms of entry requirements.

Return flights from the UK to Fiji typically range from £900 to £2,000 or more, depending on the airline, routing, booking lead time, and time of travel. Fares at the higher end reflect the remoteness of the destination and limited airline competition. Booking well in advance (4–6 months) and travelling during the low season offers the best value.

Fiji is renowned for its warm hospitality ('Bula spirit'), stunning island scenery, and outstanding marine environments. Top experiences include island hopping through the Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains, world-class scuba diving and snorkelling on the Great Astrolabe Reef, participating in traditional kava ceremonies with local villagers, relaxing in luxury overwater bungalows, surfing legendary breaks like Cloudbreak, visiting traditional Fijian villages, and exploring the lush Navua River by bamboo raft.

The currency in Fiji is the Fijian Dollar (FJD). Major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, dive operators, and shops in tourist areas. Cash is essential for local markets, smaller villages, and some transport. ATMs are readily available in Nadi and Suva but can be scarce on smaller islands — it is advisable to carry enough Fijian Dollars before heading to outer islands.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for Fiji. While major resorts often have on-site medical facilities, serious illnesses or injuries may require evacuation to Australia or New Zealand, which is extremely costly without insurance. Your policy should cover medical expenses (including diving-related incidents if applicable), emergency repatriation, trip cancellation, and loss or theft of belongings.

Standard economy baggage allowances for flights to Fiji from the UK typically include one checked bag of 23–30kg depending on the airline and fare type. Fiji Airways generally allows 30kg in economy. Singapore Airlines and Qantas allowances vary by ticket class. Carry-on luggage is typically 7–10kg. If you are continuing to smaller islands on domestic Fiji Airlines services, baggage limits are significantly lower — often 15–20kg — so pack accordingly.

Fiji has a tropical maritime climate with two main seasons. The dry season (May–October) is the most popular with temperatures of 23–27°C, low humidity, and sunny skies — perfect for beach and water activities. The wet season (November–April) brings higher temperatures (28–31°C), heavy afternoon downpours, high humidity, and a risk of cyclones from December to March. Sea temperatures are warm year-round at 26–29°C. The eastern sides of the main islands receive significantly more rainfall than the western (leeward) sides.
