Flight Centre travel expert Sian Sherriff from our Flight Centre Mt Eden Store has recently travelled to Peru,  South America. In this blog, Sian shares with us her top five must-do's whilst exploring the stunning country of contrasts, Peru.

1. Machu Picchu is not to be missed. The history, the mountains and the jungle added to the mystery and the well preserved Inca ruins are a truly spectacular experience.

2. The Lares Trail is a fabulous alternative to, although nothing like, the Inca Trail. With no stairs and shorter days, this is an easier option, however the trek reaches a higher altitude. Trek through farmland, stay in local villages and meet the people.

3. Try the local cuisine - Peruvians love their food. They like it flavourful and they like big portions - you will never go hungry. Be adventurous, try empanadas (small pies), try the alpaca or guinea pig and try one or two of the 9,500 known varieties of potato! There is a local dish to suit every taste and budget.

4. Visit the Amazon jungle from Puerto Maldonado.  I suggest staying at an eco-lodge and walking through the jungle to see the exotic wildlife up close.

5. Wander the streets and explore the local markets in the picturesque city of Cuzco.  This is a great opportunity to visit the nearby ruins of Saqsaywaman, the Sacred Valley and the Pisac Market.
